The internet is a copy machine. At its most foundational level, it copies every action, every character, every thought we make while we ride upon it. In order to send a message from one corner of the internet to another, the protocols of communication demand that the whole message be copied along the way several times. IT companies make a lot of money selling equipment that facilitates this ceaseless copying. Every bit of data ever produced on any computer is copied somewhere. The digital economy is thus run on a river of copies. Unlike the mass-produced reproductions of the machine age, these copies are not just cheap, they are free.

Is IT a “profession?”
Certifications and professional organizations are window dressing. IT won’t be a profession until IT people start going to jail. People who shred paper can go to jail. Why not negligent people whose info system design and operation have the same effect?

How is a profession defined?
Wikipedia quotes the The New Fontana Dictionary of Modern Thought for this definition:

. . . the development of formal qualifications based upon education and examinations, the emergence of regulatory bodies with powers to admit and discipline members, and some degree of monopoly rights.

By that definition IT is only an “occupation” like, heh, blogging.

Meet the enforcers
Lawyers can be disbarred for malpractice. A doctor’s license can be revoked. Structural engineer’s licenses can be revoked and they can be sued for malpractice.

Software engineers are an obvious exception: if they could be sued they’d all be paupers. Software engineering clearly isn’t a profession. Someday, maybe.

At the end of April, The Wharton School and CareerBuilder.com released new research on offshoring based on data from 3,000 hiring managers and HR professionals.

If you’re in any of the sectors audited, you should be aware of some of the findings. With abounding uncertainty regarding the long-term outlook of both companies and employees, I found this report to be valuable and insightful because since 2003 I have been warning that nobody is bulletproof when it comes to offshoring.

Now, with business results dicey in many organizations, and the economy making it tougher to get new investment funds, the economics of using overseas staff and management become ever more persuasive.

Here are some of the key findings:

69% of employers believe high skill service positions are now at equal or greater risk of being sent overseas than low skill jobs. Examples they cite included programmers, software developers, marketing, system analysts and general managers.

Industries cited as being at risk included technology services, telecom, engineering, banking, utilities, and communications. For the most part, these are organizations that haven’t yet felt a great impact in the management ranks from offshoring.

Regarding what happened to those employees who had their jobs sent overseas - 71% were let go.

44% of those who are offshoring are using India as the locale of choice, China picked up 24% and Mexico 12%.

Most employers felt they could save money while keeping their service and quality at the same levels.

If you’re in a role that, for the most part, is dependent upon decision-tree logic to make decisions, you need to be concerned about this. Research had already shown that accountants can be replaced (TurboTax), lawyers can be replaced (Completecase.com), and medical doctors can be replaced with MRI’s now being read overnight in South Asia for hospitals in the west.

My advice: Prepare for the worst and ensure that you are doing work that demands more from the creative side for success. No software or computer has yet figured out how to reproduce that type of work. And many think it’s far more enjoyable work.

In contrast to current searching technique by keywords, Powerset shows its search solution by semantic. Powerset places much store by their ability to ‘read and extract meaning’ from a user’s query; and from the resources that they are searching.

The key benefit to Powerset does not seem to be offering users the ability to type their queries as sentences. Rather, it is the additional meaning that the system is then able to glean from the sentence and the way that it has been formed; meaning that enables something approaching understanding; understanding that then enables a more relevant answer to be returned.

For example. it attempts to enable an application to answer queries such as “What did the FDA approve?” , “what disease killed a politician?” , etc

The roots of Powerset’s capabilities relate to Natural Language Processing, a ‘Conversational User Interface,’ or CUI.  It was suggested that most users wanted their computers to be ‘better companions,’ understanding the user, their context and their requirements.

Pay special attention to Point 5. Most IT jobs in are downgrading to PC tech support! :<

If pay rate for a skill is any indication of its value, there are some IT skills that look to be well on their way to extinction. A recent piece from Networkworld listed the five high-tech skills that don’t command the pay that they once did:

1. Plain old HTML

The article says that the demand for skills in HTML programming is declining as companies start to embrace Web 2.0 technologies.

2. Legacy programming languages

Skills centered around programming languages such as Cobol, Fortran, PowerBuilder, and more, don’t rate as highly as they once did. In fact, the article quotes recent research by Foote Partners IT which revealed that Cobol, PowerBuilder, and Jini noncertified skills were among the lowest-paying skills in the second half of 2007.

3. NetWare

Research quoted in the article seems to bear out that Windows Server and Linux skills have either replaced, or are replacing, NetWare skills in terms of demand.

4. Non-IP network

IP and Internet skills have usurped non-IP network expertise.

5. PC tech support

According to the article:

CompTIA surveyed 3,578 IT hiring managers to learn which skills would grow in importance over time and the industry organization found: “The skill area expected to decline the most in importance is hardware.”

Foote Partners’ research separately showed an 11.1% decline in pay over the last six months of 2007 for ITIL skills, which are often put in place to streamline IT service management and help desk efforts.

Is this news? Do you agree or disagree?

In a recent post, Toni Bowers (Head Blogs Editor, Tech Republic, Career Management) shared a list of The 10 Hottest IT jobs. Number six on the list was a new one to me and caused me to think. It was one of those “aha” moments where I realized that I have had a paradigm shift (a favorite jargon phrase) about what I would like to do for a living. The source of the original material is Baseline magazine. Here is number six:

Business Technology Professionals

“The difference between business technology and information technology roles is that IT delivers a particular service-whether it’s a shared service or an application or whatever, while business technology workers accomplish the hybrid goals that live between the business and IT. These are strategic roles that are all about aligning the business needs with IT.” At first I thought this was describing an IT Manager or CIO. Read on.

Part of the quote from the original article is very telling: “The fact that there even are designated ‘business technology’ roles should scare IT professionals because…they exist only because IT isn’t doing what is expected of it.” In other words, we computer types are not doing well at integrating into the businesses we serve. We are so focused on doing technical tasks that we can miss how our work helps the business grow.
